Tripods and heads for spotting scopes

Our verdictA steady tripod with a smooth pan head matters as much as the scope itself.

A spotting scope magnifies every wobble. A flimsy tripod makes even an expensive scope frustrating to use, especially in wind. Look for a sturdy set of legs and a fluid pan head that moves smoothly without jerking.

If you walk long distances, carbon fibre legs save weight; if you mostly bird from the car or a hide, a solid aluminium tripod is excellent value.
