Overview

The black-winged petrel (Pterodroma nigripennis) is a species of seabird in the family Procellariidae. It breeds on a number of oceanic islands in the tropical and subtropical East Pacific Ocean and spends the rest of the year at sea.

Range and habitat

Breeds Round Island (southwestern Indian Ocean), southwestern Pacific from Lord Howe and Phillip Island of the Norfolk group (east of Australia), islets off New Caledonia, islets off North Island (New Zealand), and Chatham Islands (east of New Zealand) eastward through Austral Islands; ranges to waters off southeastern Australia and Pacific Ocean southeast of Japan eastward to northwestern Mexico and southward to Peru.
