Overview
The purple sandpiper (Calidris maritima) is a small shorebird in the sandpiper family Scolopacidae. This is a hardy sandpiper that breeds in the arctic and subarctic regions of Eurasia and North America and winters further south on the Atlantic coast.

Range and habitat
Breeds montane tundra from Greenland and Iceland eastward through Arctic Europe and Russia to Taymyr Peninsula (north-central Siberia), also Banks to southern Ellesmere and Baffin islands (north-central Canada); winters rocky North Atlantic coasts from Iceland and Faroe Islands to western Europe, and Labrador and Gulf of St. Lawrence (southeastern Canada) southward to North Carolina.
