Primaries

The outermost flight feathers of the wing, attached to the "hand"; they provide most of the forward thrust.

Most birds have 9–11 primaries. Their length, shape and pattern (for example, pale “windows” or dark tips) are important field marks, especially in raptors, gulls and shorebirds.
